In her hieratic silence, this broad-featured girl with her heavy mane of hair is related to the marble head of the Russian Peasant Girl (1944). Her nude torso is structured, the verticality of her arms emphasizes her immobility which is part of the essence of the trunk from which she is carved. Herman Wald’s used the direct carving technique and has utilized the texture and the grain of the kiat wood to delineate the form.
